Tattoo Care Guide:
Before, During & After
Your tattoo journey extends beyond our time in the studio. It's about caring for your skin at every stage. From preparation to healing, proper care ensures your tattoo looks its best.
Tattoo Pre-Care Guidance
Getting a tattoo is an exciting experience, and preparing your body properly ensures the best results and a smoother process. Follow these essential tips to be fully ready for your session:
1. Prioritise Sleep
A good night's sleep significantly boosts your pain tolerance and helps your body handle the stress of the tattooing process. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep the night before your appointment. Being well-rested improves your overall experience and helps you stay calm and comfortable.
2. Eat a Balanced Meal
Fuelling your body prevents lightheadedness, fainting, and fatigue during your session. Have a nutritious meal at least an hour before your appointment. Choose a mix of protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates to maintain steady energy levels. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can make you feel sluggish.
3. Stay Hydrated & Moisturised
Hydrated, well-moisturised skin is more elastic and reacts better to the tattoo process, making it easier for me to apply ink smoothly. Drink plenty of water throughout the week leading up to your session. Moisturise your skin daily, but skip applying skin products on the day of your appointment to avoid interference with the tattooing process.
4. Avoid Alcohol & Drugs
Substances like alcohol and drugs thin your blood, leading to increased bleeding, delayed healing, and diminished pain tolerance. They can also impair your judgment during the process. Refrain from consuming alcohol or drugs for at least 24 hours before your appointment. This helps your body stay in optimal condition and ensures the best possible results.
5. Let Me Handle Hair Removal
Shaving or waxing before your session can irritate the skin, making it more sensitive during the tattooing process. Leave any necessary hair removal to me. I'll ensure the area is prepped properly without compromising your skin’s condition.
6. Keep Your Skin Healthy
Tattoos should not be applied over sunburned, tanned, or damaged skin, as this can affect the healing process and the final result. Protect your skin in the weeks leading up to your appointment. Avoid excessive sun exposure, fake tan products, and activities that might cause cuts or abrasions. If you have any skin conditions, such as eczema, please inform me ahead of time.
During Your Tattoo
This guidance will ensure your tattoo session is smooth and comfortable. If you have any questions or special requirements, please reach out before your appointment or speak to me during your session.
1. Stay Nourished & Hydrated
Maintaining your blood sugar levels helps you stay level-headed and prevents fainting. Bring snacks and water or fizzy drinks to your appointment. Light snacks like nuts, fruit, or granola bars are ideal for keeping your energy levels up without causing a sugar crash. Regularly sip on water or a non-caffeinated beverage to stay hydrated.
2. Dress Comfortably
Comfortable clothing makes it easier to access the area being tattooed and ensures you remain relaxed throughout the session. Wear loose, comfortable clothing suitable for the area being tattooed. For instance, if you're getting a leg tattoo, wear shorts or loose trousers that can be easily rolled up. If you're unsure what to wear, please ask me for advice beforehand.
3. Bring Entertainment
Having something to occupy your mind can make the time pass more quickly and comfortably, reducing stress and discomfort. Feel free to bring a book, tablet, or headphones with your favourite music or podcasts. This can help you stay relaxed and distract you from any discomfort during the tattooing process.
4. Stay Calm & Breathe
Staying calm and maintaining a steady breathing pattern helps manage pain and keeps you relaxed. Practice deep breathing techniques if you start feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Focus on slow, deep breaths to help your body stay relaxed. If you feel overwhelmed at any point, please let me know; we can take a short break if needed.
5. Communicate With Me
Open communication ensures that your needs and concerns are addressed promptly, leading to a better experience. Don’t hesitate to speak up if you need a break, feel uncomfortable, or have any questions during the session. I am here to make sure you’re comfortable and appreciate knowing if there’s anything you need.
Tattoo Aftercare Guidance
By following this tattoo aftercare guide, you can help your tattoo heal properly. If you have any questions or notice any unusual symptoms, please contact me immediately.
Initial Aftercare (First 2-4 Hours):
1. Remove the Bandage
This allows plasma to be absorbed and creates a barrier against bacteria. Remove the bandage 2-4 hours after your tattoo session.
2. Gently Wash the Tattoo
This cleans the tattoo and removes any remaining plasma or clotting. Use warm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap. Gently wash the tattooed area, removing any plasma or dried blood. Pat dry with a clean towel and allow the tattoo to air dry.
3. Apply Unscented Moisturiser
This keeps the tattooed area moisturised and aids in healing. Apply a thin layer of unscented moisturiser. Rub the moisturiser into the skin until it no longer appears wet or glossy. Avoid leaving a thick layer on top of the healing area.
4. Repeat Steps 2-3
3-4 times a day with clean, washed hands.
Next Steps:
First Week: Regular Cleaning & Moisturising
This maintains cleanliness and prevents drying out of the tattooed area. Follow steps 2-4 from the initial aftercare routine 3-4 times a day. Always use clean hands to avoid infection.
After First Week: Expect Flaking & Shedding
This is a normal part of the healing process. Continue with the cleaning and moisturising routine but reduce frequency to twice a day or as needed. Do not pick at the flaking skin.
Good To Know
Avoid soaking the tattooed area.
This prevents infection and prolongs healing. Do not soak the tattoo in bathwater, hot tubs, swimming pools, lakes, or oceans until it is fully healed (approximately 2 weeks). Washing under running water is recommended.
Manage Itching.
Scratching can damage the tattoo and introduce bacteria. Apply skincare or gently tap the area to relieve itching. Avoid scratching or picking at the tattoo.
Avoid Tanning Beds & Sun Exposure.
Excessive sun exposure can damage the tattoo and cause premature fading. Avoid tanning beds and direct sun exposure. Use sunscreen with both UVA and UVB protection or keep the tattoo covered if you must be in the sun for extended periods.
Wear Loose Fitting Clothing.
This prevents irritation and allows the tattoo to breathe. Wear loose clothing over the tattooed area during the healing process.
Maintain a Clean Environment.
This reduces the risk of infection. Avoid exposure to animal dander and unclean environments. Follow the cleaning and moisturising steps diligently to keep the area clean.
